Asian hair is naturally straight in most cases, which raises an important question: who actually wants straightening? Two main groups: (1) Asians with naturally wavy or textured hair (common in Southeast Asian backgrounds and mixed-heritage individuals) who want smoother, more controlled hair; and (2) Asians whose hair has been permed or treated and now needs to be relaxed back to straight.

The main professional straightening services for Asian hair: Thermal reconditioning / Japanese straightening (縮毛矯正) is the strongest and most permanent option. Uses a combination of chemical straightening agent and a flat iron pressed at high temperature to permanently reform the hair's bonds. Results are completely straight and extremely long-lasting (6–12 months until roots grow in). Best for genuinely wavy or coarse, frizzy Asian hair.

Korean-style flat perm (壓貼燙) is a gentler alternative that produces a "naturally straight" look with a slight softness — not pin-straight, but smooth and pressed. The goal is natural movement, not rigidity. Popular for men's Korean cuts and for women who want controlled but not stiff hair.

Keratin treatment is not a true straightening — it smooths the cuticle and reduces frizz without permanently restructuring the hair. Results last 3–4 months.

A key warning: straightening treatments on very fine or damaged Asian hair can flatten the hair to an unnatural, textureless state. Discuss your hair's natural weight and texture with your stylist before committing.
