Chlorine & Saltwater Care for Swimmers' Hair

Chlorine and salt are hard on hair: both pull out moisture and roughen the cuticle, salt leaves it crunchy, and chlorine can bind to lightened hair and turn it faintly green. Coarse Asian hair holds up better than most, but frequent swimming still leaves it dry and brittle. The routine is three moves: shield the hair before you get in, chelate the chlorine and minerals out afterward, and deep-condition to put back what the water took.

What does chlorine actually do to hair?

Chlorine is an oxidiser — it strips the natural oils and moisture that keep hair flexible, roughens the cuticle so hair tangles and dulls, and over time makes it brittle. On lightened or highlighted hair it does one more thing: it helps copper in the water bind to the strand, which is what turns pool-swimmers' hair faintly green. Saltwater is gentler chemically but very drying, and the salt crystals rough up the surface as they dry. Either way, the damage is dryness plus a raised cuticle.

How do I protect my hair before I swim?

Make it too full to soak up much pool water. Wet your hair thoroughly with clean tap water before you get in — hair that is already saturated absorbs far less chlorinated water — then work through a leave-in conditioner or a light oil to seal the cuticle as a barrier. A silicone-based leave-in is ideal here because it repels water. Tucking it into a cap on top of that is the belt-and-braces version. The goal is simple: less pool water in, less damage out.

Do I really need a special shampoo after swimming?

For occasional swims, a good moisturising wash is enough. But if you swim often, yes — a regular shampoo doesn't remove chlorine and mineral deposits, so they keep building up and drying the hair out. A chelating or clarifying shampoo is formulated to bind and rinse those away, and for lightened hair it is also what lifts the green tint. Use it after swimming (not necessarily daily), then always follow with a deep conditioner, because clarifying alone leaves hair thirsty.

The routine

Three steps, not a shelf of bottles.

Picked from our stylist-recommended library and grouped the way a stylist would build your routine — a mix of salon-grade and accessible K- and J-beauty at each step.

Step 1 · Cleanse

After you swim, a chelating or clarifying shampoo binds and rinses out the chlorine, salt, and minerals a normal wash leaves behind — this is also what lifts the green tint from lightened hair.

Kerastase Resistance Masque Therapiste

Kérastase

A repair mask direction for very damaged hair after repeated bleach or heat services.

Why Asian Stylists Recommend It

Step 3 · Protect & Style

Before you get in: saturate hair with clean water, then seal it with a leave-in or light oil so it can't soak up as much chlorinated or salt water. Less water in, less damage.

Lador

Lador Eco Professional Keratin Leave-In selected for Asian hair needs abroad.

Why Asian Stylists Recommend It

Processed Asian hair needs ongoing repair between deep treatments; a daily keratin leave-in softens and reinforces damaged lengths and adds heat protection, which a rinse-out conditioner cannot do once you leave the shower.

Best for

Bleached, color-treated, or heat-styled Asian hair wanting daily keratin support and heat protection.

Un-Frizz Cream

Virtue Labs

Virtue Labs Un-Frizz Cream selected for Asian hair needs abroad.

Why Asian Stylists Recommend It

Thick, coarse Asian hair frizzes and reverts in humidity; a keratin anti-frizz cream smooths and blocks humidity so a blow-out stays sleek, which the hair will not do on its own in wet weather.

Best for

Thick, coarse, frizzy, or humidity-prone Asian hair needing frizz control and smoothness.
