Blue Shampoo for Brassy Brown Hair

Near-black Asian hair does not lift straight to blonde — it passes through red, then orange, and most brunette colour stops right there. That is why brown hair goes brassy-orange rather than yellow, and why purple shampoo disappoints so many people who try it: purple cancels yellow, and orange needs blue. If the unwanted tone in your mirror is orange or copper, this is your page.

Blue or purple shampoo — how do you choose?

Look at the unwanted tone, not your hair colour name. Yellow needs purple; orange needs blue — each pigment cancels the one sitting opposite it on the colour wheel. Hair lifted all the way to blonde or platinum drifts yellow, so purple is right. Hair lifted only to brown, dark ash, or milk-tea stops in the orange band, so blue is right. If you see both — orange roots, yellow ends — many people use blue on the roots and purple on the lengths.

Why does dark Asian hair go orange when you lighten it?

Because of what lifting actually removes. Dark hair holds a lot of underlying warm pigment, and bleach strips it in order: black to brown, brown to red, red to orange, orange to yellow, yellow to pale. Getting to a soft brown or ash brown means stopping in the orange band, so that warmth is sitting right underneath your colour. Every wash strips a little of the toner on top, and the orange shows through again — which is why brunettes need maintenance just as much as blondes.

How do you use blue shampoo without going too dark?

Less often and shorter than you would use purple. Blue pigment is more visible on brown hair than violet is on blonde, so over-depositing can leave the hair looking muddy or flat rather than cleanly cool. Once a week, two to three minutes, and dilute it in your palm if your hair is porous or your colour is on the lighter end of brown. If it does go too cool, a clarifying wash brings it back.

The routine

Blue toning, plus what keeps brown brown.

Cancelling orange is half the job; the other half is slowing the fade that lets orange resurface. Both are below.

Hard water leaves mineral deposit that reads as extra warmth and dullness on brown hair — if brass returns days after toning, check the water before toning harder.
